Description

Tufnol Whale Sheet is genuine Whale Brand Tufnol, a medium weave cotton fabric laminate bonded with phenolic resin, known in the trade as SRBF (synthetic resin bonded fabric). Tufnol rates it as its most popular grade for mechanical work, with good strength, toughness and wear resistance. It is made to BS EN 60893-3-4 Type PF CC 203, the grade formerly listed as BS 2572 Type F2.

Engineers and model engineers use Whale for gears, sprockets, bushes, spacers, wear strips, jigs and fixtures, and it machines well on a lathe or mill. It is a long-standing choice for pulley sheaves and boat fittings, and makes hard-wearing knife scales and tool handles. Use it for electrical insulation at low voltages only; for switchgear and panel work, choose Kite.

We stock Whale in 1mm, 2mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 12mm, 20mm, 25mm and 50mm. Choose a cut piece from 150 x 150mm up to 600 x 600mm, or one of the full sheets listed. Need a different size, or a full sheet of 6mm, 8mm or 12mm up to 2440 x 1220mm? Call us and we will quote for collection or pallet delivery.

Whale is supplied in its natural brown colour without protective film. The shade varies from sheet to sheet and between batches, so your piece may not match the photo exactly. It is an engineering material, so expect surface scuffs and handling marks; these are cosmetic and usually machine off. Stock is limited, and once these sheets are gone we cannot promise more at this price.

Which Tufnol grade is right for you?

Whale is the tough, fabric-based grade for moving and load-bearing parts. For electrical insulation, Tufnol Kite Sheet has far higher electric strength and is rated for low, medium and high voltages. For economical spacers, base plates and low voltage panels, choose Tufnol 1P/13 Sheet. Prefer a thermoplastic for food machinery gears? See our Acetal Natural Sheet, or browse our full Tufnol sheet range.

Please read before ordering: two tolerances apply

  • Cut size tolerance: cut pieces are nominal sizes and may measure up to 3mm under on length or width, as they are cut from full sheets with a 3mm saw blade. Full sheets are supplied at mill size.
  • Thickness tolerance: Tufnol sheet is supplied as moulded. Tufnol’s standard tolerance for Whale is ±0.40mm at 6mm, ±0.49mm at 8mm and ±0.64mm at 12mm, so a 6mm sheet can measure 5.60 to 6.40mm. Every thickness is listed in the Technical tab. Thickness can vary across a single sheet. This is normal for laminated sheet, not a fault, so allow stock to machine down if you need a precise thickness.

Need a closer size or a finished part? Contact us before ordering on 01427 611668 or at sales@trentplastics.co.uk and we’ll advise and quote.

Placed my order for replacement greenhouse acrylic on a Sunday, arrived by the Wednesday, very pleased with the delivery time. The plastic is of excellent quality, cut accurate and well. The packing was well thought out, with plastic spacers on each corner to prevent any damage in transit. Would defiantly be my first choice to go to if I need any more replacements for my greenhouse. Thank you

How do I measure for cutouts or holes?

Measure from the edges of the sheet to the sides of the hole for the most accurate positioning. For more complex designs, please provide a drawing or digital file.

What is the standard radius of a curved corner?

Unless otherwise specified, our standard corner radius is 5mm.

What is the largest sheet size you can cut?

    What is your cutting tolerance?

We cut acrylic sheets with a tolerance of +/- 1mm. For tighter tolerances, please contact us in advance.

    What are polished edges?

Polished edges are the smooth, glossy edges that result from diamond polishing or flame polishing after cutting. It gives the edge a clearer, glass-like finish.

    What is diamond polishing?
