Fascias
What are Fascias?
Some people are unsure as to the difference between a soffit and a fascia. Here at Trent Plastics we are often told that a client is in need of a new fascia, only to discover that it's the soffit that is in need of replacement. The guide and picture left should help to clarify what's what. Trent Plastics Fascias, Soffits and Guttering the fascia is mounted at the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the house.

Fascia
The fascia board is a long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof. The fascia is fixed directly to the roof trusses and usually supports the bottom row of tiles. This is also where the guttering is attached. A fascia is not just a flimsy piece of wood or plastic, it has to be pretty tough and well fixed, as when the skies open, the rain can amount to several gallons of water per second running into the guttering.

Soffits
What is a soffit?
The soffit board is immediately under the fascia board. Remember, the fascia board is fixed vertically on the face of the building, whereas the soffit is fixed horizontally, facing downwards. In other words, it's the board you see when you look up from ground level.

Modern soffits are often ventilated to allow a good air flow into the roof cavity. Some provide ventilation over the top of the fascia board. Whatever type is used, ventilation is an important factor as without it, condensation can form in the roof void increasing the risk of timber decay.

Guttering

Guttering is more than just functional, it protects your home the main purpose of guttering is to protect your homes foundation by channeling the water away from its base. The gutter also helps to reduce erosion of exterior building finishes such as brickwork and render, protects painted or stained surfaces by reducing exposure to rain water, and provides a means to collect rainwater for later use in a water butt or similar recepticle.

When it comes to home improvements, gutters tend to be overlooked, we really just take them for granted, but they provide an essential service that protects the entire property. Trent Plastics can advise you on the best guttering solution for your property.
